Trail of Faith Award


  The Trail of Faith is a spiritual and physical challenge designed to help both youth and adults prepare for the Surprise Stake Youth Pioneer Trek.  The January 2014-May 2014 challenges are designed to be completed before your feet ever hit the dusty trail. 
Rely on your Father in Heaven as you proceed on your personal Trail of Faith.  In completing this preparation program, you will be called upon to exercise faith and make sacrifices not unlike that of the pioneer saints.  Beloved brothers and sisters, 
Gird up your loins; fresh courage take. Our God will never us forsake….
Do this, and joy your hearts will swell-- All is well! All is well!” 
To earn your Trail of Faith Award,
 please complete the Trail of Faith challenges by May 31, 2014.

May 2014 – “Fire of the Covenant”

Develop an understanding that the making and keeping of sacred Temple covenants is not always convenient.  Keeping covenants will sanctify us and bring us joy.

SPIRITUAL PREPARATION:

Do Daily:

      ⃝    Personal prayer, both morning and night

      ⃝    Read daily from the Book of Mormon (Seminary course of study)

      ⃝    Keep the standards found in For the Strength of Youth

Fast Sunday Suggestion: (May 4)
Fast and pray that you will develop a burning desire within your heart to live worthy of the sacrifice of our Savior.  Pray for the strength to give all that the Lord requires of you.  Pray for a desire to be worthy of a Temple recommend and for the opportunity to attend the Temple often. 

Do Weekly:  (Continue to memorize scripture and hymn throughout the month)
Record spiritual impressions in your Trail of Faith journal.

Week 1:

       ⃝ Memorize Scripture:  D&C 87:8 Wherefore, stand ye in holy places, and be not moved, until the 
        day of the Lord come; for behold, he cometh quickly, saith the Lord. Amen.

       ⃝  Memorize Hymns (all verses):


        ⃝   Read quote: Russell M. Nelson, “Covenants,” General Conference, Oct. 2011.
        “When we realize that we are children of the covenant, we know who we are and what God    
           expects of us. His law is written in our hearts.  He is our God and we are His people.  
           Committed children of the covenant remain steadfast, even in the midst of adversity.”

Week 2:

         ⃝   Continue memorizing scripture and hymns from week 1.

         ⃝   Read and ponder 1 Peter 1:7-9

         ⃝   Read and be able to recount the story of pioneer, Emily Hill Woodmansee.

Week 3:
  
         ⃝   Continue memorizing scripture and hymns from week 1.

         ⃝   Read the “Message to the Youth from The First Presidency” in the “For the Strength of Youth” 
           booklet.  Review the standards in the booklet.  Consider which of these might represent the 
           “blizzard” in your life or the “mob” you may have to run away from.  Make a commitment to be 
           true to these standards.

          ⃝   View, listen to, or read General Conference address by President Thomas S. Monson,  

          ⃝   View, listen to, or read General Conference address by Elder Russell M. Nelson, 
            “Covenants,” Oct. 2011.


Week 4:

          ⃝   Continue memorizing scripture and hymns from week 1.

          ⃝   Read and ponder Mosiah 4:29-30 and D&C 82:3

          ⃝   Read and be able to recount the story of pioneers, 

          ⃝   Teach a Family Home Evening lesson or conduct a discussion around the family dinner table 
            this week. Re-tell the pioneer story that impressed you this month and share what you have 
            learned about “The Fire of the Covenant,” sacrifice, and the importance of Temple Covenants.


MAY PHYSICAL PREPARATION:

Walk, run, or bike for 40-60 minutes or FOUR TO FIVE MILES at least four times each week.

April 2014 – “Follow the Prophet”

Recognizing God’s Prophets and Apostles as witnesses of Jesus Christ and the mouthpieces of God. Trusting in and following their counsel will bless us eternally.

      ⃝   Memorize Scripture: D&C 1:38 What I the Lord have spoken, I have spoken, and I excuse not   
         myself; and though the heavens and the earth pass away, my word shall not pass away, but shall 
         all be fulfilled, whether by mine own voice or by the voice of my servants, it is the same.

Pondering the principles in this address will help us make the connection between our lives and the pioneer saints.  Faith and sacrifice are required by us, just as faith sacrifice were required by them.  This is worth pondering as we begin our Trail of Faith.
